Michael trained as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) at the University of California, Los Angeles, and worked providing pre-hospital care and patient transport for an Ambulance company in Los Angeles. Loving the work but wanting a greater skill set, Michael went on to become a Registered Nurse in California, completing his basic training at Santa Monica College and then continuing his nursing education at California State University, Stanislaus where he obtained his Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN) Certification.
While working as an Emergency Room nurse in Centinela Hospital Medical Center, Inglewood, his wife was offered an opportunity in Geneva, so the family packed up and relocated in 2015. Since then, Michael has spent time working with refugees in Greece and has been involved in public health and community nursing in Malawi and Uganda. He has also completed the Nursing Diploma in Tropical Medicine in his hometown of Liverpool.
For the last several years, Michael has worked for the World Health Organisation and other United Nations agencies as a Staff Medical Service nurse, providing clinical care, travel medicine and occupational health assistance. He also worked as part of the United Nations COVID Medical Co-ordination Unit.
Working within these different settings and populations has shown Michael the importance of meeting people where they are when it comes to health care and health education, which is why he values being able to deliver hands-on first aid training and personal health education.
Michael is also an avid reader of science fiction and fantasy and can often be found outdoors exploring nature.
